Commissioned by the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra of Duluth, Minnesota, this work honors the life and legacy of one if its own members, James Stellmaker, who enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a public school music educator in Duluth. In contrast to a typical elegy, Twin Ports Overture has a celebratory feel, sparkling and colorful. Brass is prominent in many parts of the work, especially featuring Mr. Stellmaker's instrument, the trombone. The well-known hymn “Praise Ye the Lord, The Almighty,” which was played at his memorial service, is featured prominently throughout the work.Twin Ports Overture has been added to the 2014 Alabama Required Music List!
