Water Nymphs is dedicated to my good friend, Michael Brewick. He gave me the gift of a very nice sounding trowel, which inspired me to write this work as an exploration of sounds. I selfishly used this as an opportunity to write for some unique instruments that I have wanted to incorporate in a composition for a long time. In the list of required instruments, I have given some possible alternatives to some of the more obscure instruments. Percussion ensembles should feel free to substitute with instruments that they have available. This piece is an exploration of sounds and their relationships with one another; so various instruments are welcome and can add to the individual interpretation of the piece. This work is loosely programmatic, depicting sounds of the forest, streams, water nymphs, and satyrs. -Brett Jones (09/27/10).
