The Knave of Hearts was on trial for stealing tarts, of course, and all the creatures were called to give evidence, including Alice, who was growing taller and taller by the minute and upsetting the court. When the White Rabbit's verses were entered as evidence in the case, the King and Queen thought that they very conclusively proved the Knave's guilt. Alice had had enough of this nonsense and started talking back to the Queen, who promptly ordered her head removed. The last thing Alice said before waking up is, “You're nothing byt a pack of cards!”.
