This trio for clarinet, cello and piano was commissioned by the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2011 to celebrate International Year of Chemistry. The work is in three movements. The first is a musical conversation between three eminent historical chemists. The second explores the phenomenon of crystallisation, while the third is based upon workshops with students in Edinburgh schools. The piece has enjoyed numerous performances across Scotland and beyond since its premiere by Hebrides Ensemble in November 2011.
