Composed by Ralf Gabriel. 20th Century. Score. 2 pages. Ralf Gabriel #2007413. Published by Ralf Gabriel (A0.1027166).

The preludes op. 23 are a series of ten pieces that are all dedicated to composers or songs that I am particularly attached to, e.g. Franz Liszt, Anton Bruckner, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Eric Satie or the Top Gun Anthem. Nr. 09 is dedidated to Morton Feldman, a Composer of the New York School, contemporary of Charles Ives and John Cage. Morton Feldmans 'Long Works' for piano are pieces that play with the sound of the Instrument in a unique way. They don't follow a certain key, and if played right the audience will not be able to detect any particular time signature. They don't seem to have a defined beginning or end. Although rather short (Feldmans 'Long Works' last up to 90 minutes), the Prelude op. 23 Nr. 9 captures the spirit of Morton Feldmans late masterpieces. The secret to Morton Feldmans 'Long Works' - and to this Prelude - is listening. All notes are not static events, their sound develops as they fade and mix with other notes. When playing this Piece, take your time, listen carefully as all instruments and all rooms are different. Try to find the right time for the next sound, experiment with intensity and duration, until you find that perfect illusion of timelessness that is the signature of the 'Long Works'.
