By Daniel Baldwin Composer's Notes... One Blue Trio was written at the suggestion of Bruce Gbur and is dedicated to my good friend, contrabassoon virtuoso Susan Nigro, who gave the piece its premiere. At the IDRS Conference in 2005, Bruce and I were visiting with Matt Morris (who had just given a stunning performance of my Midwest River Fantasy) about the extreme short supply of contrabassoon literature. Bruce then told me about the Red Hot Duets for two contrabassoons and suggested that I should write a piece for small contrabassoon ensemble. Myself being a strong advocate of the contrabassoon as a serious instrument, took this to heart and went to work on a piece that I felt would be a nice addition to the existing literature. This Trio is intended to be a companion piece to the Red Hot Duets. Those duets are very exciting, aggressive, jazzy, and energetic, so I decided to write a slow lyrical movement to counter them. It begins with a beautiful chorale that frames a swinging blues section and ultimately ends peacefully.
