By David Angelo Ciancaglini. Composer's Notes... Cherry Blossom Overture is a picture music work that tells the tale of a Japanese cherry blossom's adventure. The cherry blossom is represented by the English Horn with the Piano and optional Percussion representing the scenery and movement. The piece begins with the cherry blossom, peacefully hanging on its tree, on the banks of a river in Japan. Small gusts of wind blow the cherry blossom about. Soon the cherry blossom is blown off its tree and gently falls into the river. The river's current carries the cherry blossom down the river. The music changes to express the motion of this river as it gently flows towards the Pacific Ocean. As the cherry blossom floats down the river, it experiences the gentle beauty of the Japanese countryside. When composing this section, I imagined seeing lush trees, beautiful flowers, birds, and an old man sleeping away the last years of his life. A calm scene of contentment and natural beauty.
