stealing a momenta. composed by Mark Ford. Marimba Solo. For marimba solo. marimba. 5 octave. Level 5. Book. Published by Innovative Percussion. IP.S-MF-STE. Composer's Notes. Stealing a Moment' was premiered at the Katowice Academy of Music in Katowice, Poland on February 22, 2010. Originally titled 'Stealing a Moment of Forgetfulness', the music contrasts a roaming hesitant theme with a simple melody. The roaming theme represents the routine of our daily lives and the simple melody represents everything beautiful. The simple melody is presented at first as a fragment which grows with each entrance. The roaming theme is gradually altered with each exposure to the simple melody. These themes combine at the end to create a flowing section representing the power of beauty and love in our daily lives. Bringing everything together, this final statement builds to a modulation that rises to a new key as the music spins away into silence. "This advanced 5.0-octave marimba solo has all the makings of a Hollywood cinema story. thought-provoking subject matter, contrasting characters, and patient thematic development. This musical narrative begins with a soft, flittering sixteenth-note idea that leads to a section of simple, yet effective counterpoint. The introductory material sets the stage for the presentation of two independent thematic ideas that are musically woven together to represent, in the composer's words, a contrast of "the routine of our daily lives" and "everything beautiful. " While "stealing a moment-" does not call for the rhythmic endurance required by some of Ford's other compositions, this piece presents its own challenges in the form of harmonicallyshifting ostinato ideas in the left hand, and repeated double lateral strokes. in fourths, sixths, and octaves. in the right hand. As the musical narrative progresses, the two thematic ideas continue to interact with each other, influencing the other, and ultimately converge for a musical climax that represents, as stated in the program notes, "the power of beauty and love in our daily lives. " Lasting over eight minutes, this composition is well suited for advanced players looking to perform a piece that showcases the musical beauty and sincerity that is achievable on the marimba. " - Joshua D. Smith Percussive Notes, March 2011.
