This piece was selected for the 29th Symposium for New Band Music in Virginia, has been presented at national and regional composition and band conferences, and received an honorable memtion in the competition for ASCAP's Rudolph Nissim Award. "Dancing on the Strand" is a 7-minute piece with echoes of Stravinsky, Schwantner, and jazz. Three playful themes are subsequently developed polyrhythmically. there are sections of two against three, three against four, five against four, and seven against four. and canonically. In the celebratory recapitulation, all three themes are combined contrapuntally. Trumpet 1 ranges up to a high D, Alto Sax 1 ranges up to an altissimo A-flat, and Flute 1 ranges up to a high D. Trumpet 1 and Trombone 1 use harmon mutes.
