This publication. includes six fairly long duos, each with three movements in fast-slow -fast presentation. Hoffmeister no doubt wrote these duos to meet demand for challenging but not overly difficult music created by a large and advanced pool of flutists wishing to play for concert or salon performance. Franz Anton Hoffmeister. born in Rottenburg am Neckar, 1754. died in Vienna, 1812. was one of the most prolific composers of flute music of his day. His works include 24 concertos for flute and orchestra, 7 concertos for 2 flutes and orchestra, approximately 40 sonatas and solos for flute and piano, approximately 130 works for 2 flutes, and nearly 70 compositions for flute and string trio--an unusually extensive range of works involving the flute. Although Hoffmeister himself did not perform as a flutist, he was certainly familiar with the capabilities of this exceptionally popular instrument. --Henner Eppel. editor.
