Buccaneer Hornpipe offers an opportunity to experience the romance and adventurous spirit of the 19th-century swashbuckler. It recalls the lively dance music of the seamen during their leisurely moments following a hard day of pirating. The opening theme, The Pirate Life, recalls the lively dance music of pirates after a hard day. Following is a lyrically tropical theme suggesting a beautiful day at sea, perhaps while resting at an island. Storm clouds gather, and the "Wrath of Triton" is unleashed on the hapless crew. Fortunately, they survive the tempest and live to celebrate with their favorite libations. The overall musical approach to the work should be light and airy, avoiding heavy articulations and excessive percussion contributions. During "Island Idyll," strive for a beautifully shaped, horizontally flowing line suggestive of the mood. The storm section should communicate intensity, but not to the point of distortion. The beach towels indicated in percussion represent wind-whipped sails. Any large pieces of cloth may be substituted. Assign the piano part to a capable player - it is a vital element of the orchestrational timbre. Carefully observe provided dynamics. They will enhance the wavelike ebb and flow of the music. Designed for high school groups and upper-level middle school groups. Independence is encouraged, but many lines are cross-cued. Usually includes an expanded percussion section. Grades 3 - 3.5.
