This tune was published on p22 of Thomas Jarman's second book, Sacred Music, comprising Thirty Six Select Hymns , London. c1812. Although it is marked 'Plaintive. C.M. Psalm 119. Pt. 17. Dr. Watts' there, the text underlaid there is from the sixteenth of Watts' paraphrases of Ps. 119. Hymn Tune Index tune number 13780. This was one of four tunes from Jarman's second book to be republished by Samuel Dyer in the first edition of his collection A New Selection of Sacred Music , Baltimore. 1817, where it was given the tune name 'Petition', but it was omitted from subsequent editions.
